Class 7 conditions (stage 1)
Alberta.ca and the 2026 Driver’s Guide agree on the learner stage:
- Minimum age 14. Parental consent if you are under 18.
- Hold Class 7 at least one year before the Class 5 road test (and you must be at least 16 to take that test).
- A fully licensed non-GDL driver who is 18 or older sits in the front passenger seat whenever you drive a car.
- No driving midnight to 5 a.m.
- No more passengers than seat belts.
- Zero alcohol and drugs while driving (or riding a motorcycle).
- Eight demerit points triggers a suspension — not Ontario’s novice nine, and not a full-licence fifteen.
You may operate a moped alone on Class 7. A car still needs the supervisor. These bullets are why people who only studied signs still fail. Practise them in impaired driving and mixed sets in the Class 7 bank.
Class 5-GDL (stage 2) in one paragraph
After the road test you are a probationary driver for a minimum of two years. Zero alcohol remains. Eight demerit points still suspends you. You still may not have more passengers than belts. You cannot supervise a learner, and you cannot reclass to a commercial Class 1–4 licence while you are GDL. The knowledge test will ask about the learner stage first; do not invent stage-2 rules that are not in the guide.
Default speeds the test likes
The 2026 Driver’s Guide’s unposted defaults (municipal bylaws can post something else):

Default school-zone hours on a school day are 8:00–9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 3:00–4:30 p.m. Default playground hours are 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset, every day. Cities often post different hours under the sign — if they do, obey the tab, not the provincial default. You may not pass another vehicle in the same direction while the zone is in effect. Drill speed and following distance with those numbers, not BC’s or Ontario’s.
