About this test

G1 is the first level of Ontario's graduated licensing system, and the G1 knowledge test is the written exam that gets you there. These questions follow that exam.

The test has 40 multiple-choice questions split into two scored sections: 20 on road signs and 20 on rules of the road. You need 80% in each section separately — 16 out of 20 on both — and you must clear both in the same sitting. A perfect score on signs will not make up for a weak result on rules, so practise the two halves separately.

The test is not timed; most people finish in 20 to 30 minutes, and it is marked on the spot. The computerized version is available in 32 languages, including Chinese. Results stay valid for a year, and if you retry inside that year you only redo the section you failed.

Applying costs $159.75, which is a package covering the knowledge test, your first G2 road test and a five-year licence. A knowledge-test retry is $16. You apply at a DriveTest centre without an appointment, bringing two original pieces of identification.

You then hold G1 for 12 months before the first road test, or 8 months with a Ministry-approved driver education course.
