Questions (2)

1. If you are turning left at an intersection where there are two available turn lanes:
  1. It is best to use the right lane. ✓
  2. It doesn’t matter which lane you use.
  3. It is best to use the left lane.

Answer: A. It is best to use the right lane.

When two left-turn lanes are available, it is best to use the right lane. The handbook says that if there are two turning lanes, you should always take the right turn lane. It warns against starting in the inside lane because you may have to swing right to make the turn. It also notes that drivers on your left can be seen more readily. Together, these points make the right-hand turning lane the recommended choice rather than a matter of personal preference.
2. When making a left turn, you should start the turn:
  1. Before reaching the center of the intersection.
  2. No sooner than the center of the intersection. ✓
  3. After your rear wheels have passed the center of the intersection.

Answer: B. No sooner than the center of the intersection.

Start the left turn no sooner than the center of the intersection. The handbook's left-turn figure says to reach the center of the intersection before you begin the turn. It explains that turning too soon can cause the left side of your vehicle to hit another vehicle because of off-tracking. So the safe starting point is the center of the intersection, not a point before it. The gear-use passage is about not shifting in turns and intersections, not about where to begin the turn.
