Class 5 License
Class 5 is the full, unrestricted licence for passenger vehicles in British Columbia. You do not sit a separate Class 5 written exam: the only knowledge test in the whole process is the one you take to get your Class 7L learner's licence, and that is the exam these questions are drawn from. The ICBC knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 40 correct — 80% — to pass. It costs $15 per attempt, is offered in 12 languages including Chinese, and since June 2026 you can write it online from home instead of visiting a driver licensing office. Online attempts must be finished within 45 minutes in a single session, and your result stays valid for one year. Questions come from the ICBC Learn to Drive Smart guide: road signs, right-of-way, speed and following distance, parking, impaired-driving penalties, and the rules of the Graduated Licensing Program itself. The GLP rules are worth studying properly — the L and N restrictions on supervisors, passengers and night driving appear regularly, and they are the part most people skip. After your L you hold it for 12 months, pass the Class 7 road test to reach N, then spend 24 months at N — 18 with an approved GLP course — before reaching a full Class 5.

What this knowledge test actually covers
The only written exam in BC’s Class 5 path is the ICBC knowledge test you take for a Class 7L learner licence. There is no second written test when you later move to N or full Class 5.
