ICBC Knowledge Test Topics: Signs, Right-of-Way, Then the L Rules

The ICBC knowledge test is the only written exam on the BC Class 5 path. It is 50 questions, 40 to pass, drawn from Learn to Drive Smart. What the 50 questions cluster around

ICBC does not publish a fixed question list. The handbook chapters that keep showing up are:

• Signs, signals and road markings — shape first, then colour. Open traffic signs until an octagon and an inverted triangle are instant.
• Right-of-way — four-way stops, unmarked intersections, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. That is the right-of-way topic.
• Speed and space — posted limits, school and playground areas, following distance. See speed and following distance.
• Sharing the road — cyclists, school buses, large trucks. Sharing the road.
• Impairment and devices — zero alcohol and drugs for learners, and no hand-held or hands-free electronics on an L. Impaired driving.
• The L rules themselves — these fail people who only studied signs.

L restrictions that become test items

ICBC’s current Class 7L page is specific. Treat these as exam facts, then re-check the official page before 19 October 2026, when some of them change:

• A qualified supervisor sits beside you. Today that person must be 25 or older with a valid Class 1–5 licence. From 19 October 2026 the minimum age listed on ICBC’s page drops to 22.
• Display the red L sign so drivers behind you can see it.
• Zero alcohol and a zero blood-drug level, including THC.
• No cellphones or other electronic devices — including hands-free.
• No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
• One extra passenger besides the supervisor, until 19 October 2026; after that date ICBC says more passengers are allowed if they are immediate family.

Those bullets are why a high signs score still fails the paper. They sit in the same 50-question mix.

A two-evening plan

1. Evening one: handbook chapters on signs and right-of-way, then only those two topics in the BC Class 5 bank.
2. Evening two: L restrictions and impairment, then a mixed set. Read every miss out loud. If you cannot say the rule, the letter will not help you at the terminal.

Passing online or in an office still does not licence you. You visit a driver-licensing office with two pieces of ID, do the vision screening, and pay the licence fee. The knowledge-test result is valid for one year.
