Questions (3)

1. If stopped on the road or shoulder, within 10 minutes, you must:
  1. Place emergency warning devices. ✓
  2. Alert local law enforcement.
  3. Stand behind your vehicle and motion for traffic to pass you.
  4. Call a mechanic.

Answer: A. Place emergency warning devices.

If you stop on the road or shoulder, you must place your emergency warning devices within 10 minutes. The handbook says that when you pull off the road and stop, you should turn on your four-way emergency flashers. It also says that if you must stop on a road or the shoulder, you must put out your emergency warning devices within ten minutes, and it then gives placement distances for those devices. That makes placing the warning devices the required action inside that ten-minute window, so the answer is the choice about setting out emergency warning devices.
2. When passing another vehicle, you should:
  1. Make eye contact with the driver.
  2. Assume the driver doesn’t see you. ✓
  3. Honk your horn.
  4. Wait for the other driver to signal that it is safe to do so.

Answer: B. Assume the driver doesn’t see you.

When passing another vehicle, assume the driver does not see you. The handbook says other drivers may not notice your vehicle even when it is plainly visible. When you are about to pass a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist, you should assume they do not see you because they could suddenly move in front of you. It adds that you may tap the horn lightly when legal, or flash your lights at night, but you must still drive carefully enough to avoid a crash even if they do not see or hear you. So the safe rule is to expect that the other driver has not noticed you.
3. When driving at highway speeds, you should watch the road about ____ ahead of your vehicle.
  1. One block
  2. 100 yards
  3. One quarter mile ✓
  4. One mile

Answer: C. One quarter mile

At highway speeds you should watch the road about one quarter mile ahead of your vehicle. The handbook says good drivers look at least 12 to 15 seconds ahead, which is the distance you will cover in that time. At lower speeds that works out to roughly one block, and at highway speeds it comes to about a quarter of a mile. Looking that far ahead gives you room to stop or change lanes without sudden moves, and the handbook notes that drivers who fall short of this may have to brake too hard or switch lanes too quickly.
