Questions (3)

1. When driving at highway speeds, you should watch the road about ____ ahead of your vehicle.
  1. One block
  2. 100 yards
  3. A quarter mile ✓

Answer: C. A quarter mile

At highway speeds you should watch the road about a quarter mile ahead of your vehicle. The handbook explains that good drivers look 12 to 15 seconds ahead, which is the distance the vehicle will cover in that time. At lower speeds that works out to roughly one block, and at highway speeds it comes to about a quarter mile. Looking that far ahead matters because stopping and lane changes take a lot of distance, so you need to see traffic early enough to have room to make those moves safely. Close attention still counts; good drivers shift their eyes between near and far.
2. When changing lanes, turn signals:
  1. Should not be used.
  2. Should only be used if a vehicle is close to you.
  3. Should be used each time. ✓

Answer: C. Should be used each time.

Turn signals should be used each time you change lanes. The handbook's lane-change instructions start with putting your turn signal on before you change lanes, and it tells you to check your mirrors again after you have signaled to confirm nobody slipped into your blind spot. The on-road section repeats that you activate turn signals when required and cancel them once the lane change is finished. Nothing in these passages makes signaling depend on whether another vehicle happens to be near you, so the signal is simply part of every lane change.
3. When passing another vehicle, you should:
  1. Make eye contact with the other driver.
  2. Assume the other driver doesn't see you. ✓
  3. Slow down.

Answer: B. Assume the other driver doesn't see you.

When passing another vehicle, assume the other driver does not see you. The handbook says that when you are about to pass a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist, you should assume they do not see you, because they could suddenly move in front of you. It tells you to let them know you are there when it is legal, such as with a light horn tap or by flashing your lights at night, and to stay ready to avoid a crash whether or not they notice you. That supports assuming the other driver does not see you.
