Questions (6)

1. To make it as safe as possible to leave a stop, you should park:
  1. So that you must back up to leave your parking space.
  2. So that you can pull forward to leave your parking space. ✓
  3. On the side of a roadway, not in a parking lot.
  4. By backing into a parking space.

Answer: B. So that you can pull forward to leave your parking space.

You should park so that you can pull forward to leave your parking space. The handbook says backing is always dangerous because you cannot see everything behind the vehicle, so you should avoid it when you can. It tells you to park in a way that lets you pull forward when you leave. Another section repeats the same idea: park where you will not have to back to get away. That is why the safe choice is to set up your stop so the vehicle can move forward out of the space.
2. When parked on the side of a road, you should:
  1. Activate your emergency flashers. ✓
  2. Turn off all lights.
  3. Open the driver’s side door.
  4. Stand in the roadway and wave your arms.

Answer: A. Activate your emergency flashers.

When you park on the side of a road, activate your four-way emergency flashers. The handbook's stopping procedure has you pull the vehicle parallel to the curb or shoulder, keep it safely out of the traffic flow, and avoid blocking driveways, hydrants, intersections or signs. Only after the vehicle is fully stopped in that position does the procedure tell you to turn on the four-way emergency flashers, then shift to neutral or park and take your feet off the pedals. The flashers are what warn other drivers that your commercial vehicle is sitting still at the edge of the road.
3. When asked to complete an offset back/left parking maneuver, you should:
  1. Pull straight forward, then back to the right.
  2. Pull straight forward, then back to the left. ✓
  3. Pull forward to the right, then back in a straight line.
  4. Pull forward to the left, then back in a straight line.

Answer: B. Pull straight forward, then back to the left.

  2. Pull straight forward, then back to the left.

5. To check the automatic transmission fluid level in some vehicles, the vehicle:
  1. Should be parked uphill.
  2. Should be parked downhill.
  3. Must be washed.
  4. May have to be left running. ✓

Answer: D. May have to be left running.

On some vehicles, the automatic transmission fluid level may have to be checked with the engine left running. The handbook's pre-trip inspection checklist says to check the automatic transmission fluid level, and notes that this check may require the engine to be running. Nothing in the checklist says the vehicle has to be parked on a slope or washed before you check the fluid, so the only supported point is that the engine may need to stay on.
6. When alley docking, your vehicle should be parked:
  1. With the front bumper on top of the front boundary line.
  2. With the rear wheels over the rear boundary line.
  3. Straight within the boundaries of the parking space. ✓
  4. At an angle within the boundaries of the parking space.

Answer: C. Straight within the boundaries of the parking space.

When alley docking, the vehicle should be parked straight within the boundaries of the parking space. The handbook's reverse offset backing/alley exercise says the vehicle must be straight within the alley when you finish and completely inside the defined exercise boundaries, except for mirrors or similar high parts. That matches parking straight within the parking space boundaries. The exercise also says backing beyond the rear boundary requires pulling forward and resuming, so the finished position cannot have wheels over the rear line. The front bumper sitting on the front boundary line is likewise not the described finished position; the whole vehicle must be within the boundaries.
