If two vehicles arrive to an uncontrolled intersection at the same time:
- The largest vehicle has the right-of-way.
- The car on the left has the right-of-way.
- The car on the left shall yield to the car on the right. ✓
- The car on the right shall yield to the car on the left.
Answer: C. The car on the left shall yield to the car on the right.
When two vehicles reach an uncontrolled intersection at about the same time, the car on the left must yield to the car on the right.
Why this is the answer
The handbook covers this under intersection rules: vehicles go through in the order they arrived, and when two arrive at roughly the same moment, each driver yields to the driver on their right. The same wording appears for intersections where the signals are dark, where the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. So the left-hand car waits and the right-hand car goes first. Size and which side of the road you are on do not enter into it.
Why the other answers are wrong
- A. The largest vehicle has the right-of-way. — Nothing in the handbook gives a bigger vehicle priority at an intersection; the rule is based on who arrived first and who is on the right.
- B. The car on the left has the right-of-way. — The handbook says the opposite of this: the driver on the left is the one who has to yield, not the one who gets the right-of-way.
- D. The car on the right shall yield to the car on the left. — This reverses the rule in the handbook, which has the left-hand driver yield to the right-hand driver, not the other way around.
Remember it
Picture yourself in the left-hand car at the same moment as another car: look right, because that driver goes first.
