When a bicyclist is making a left turn:
- They may use the left lane. ✓
- They may cut through all lanes.
- They may wait on the side of the road.
Answer: A. They may use the left lane.
A bicyclist making a left turn may legally use the left turn lane.
Why this is the answer
The handbook, in its list of turn rules, states directly that bicyclists can legally use the left turn lane for their left turns. So a cyclist turning left is treated like other traffic preparing for a left turn and belongs in that left-side position, not off to the side of the road. Nothing in the passages gives a cyclist permission to sweep across every lane to make the turn.
Why the other answers are wrong
- B. They may cut through all lanes. — Nothing in the handbook allows a bicyclist to cut across all lanes for a left turn; the rule is to turn from the left turn lane.
- C. They may wait on the side of the road. — Waiting on the side of the road is not how a left turn is made, and the handbook instead says bicyclists may use the left turn lane.
Remember it
Think of a cycling left turn like yours: get into the left turn lane, then turn.
