To see vehicles in your blind spots, you should check:
- The inside rearview mirror.
- The outside rearview mirror.
- Over your shoulders. ✓
Answer: C. Over your shoulders.
You should check over your shoulders to see vehicles in your blind spots.
Why this is the answer
The California Driver Handbook says blind spots are areas around the vehicle you cannot see while looking straight ahead or using the mirrors. For most vehicles, they are at the sides, slightly behind the driver. The handbook directs you to look over your right and left shoulders out of your side windows. Turn only your head, not your whole body or the steering wheel. That is why checking over your shoulders is the correct way to see vehicles that mirrors do not show.
Why the other answers are wrong
- A. The inside rearview mirror. — The inside rearview mirror does not let you see the side areas slightly behind you that the handbook defines as blind spots.
- B. The outside rearview mirror. — The outside rearview mirror alone does not cover the blind spots, which the handbook says are areas you cannot see using the mirrors.
Remember it
Mirrors show what is behind; your shoulders show what is beside.
