In what position on the roadway must you be before making a left turn from a one-way traffic street?
- It does not matter provided you signal
- Close to the right hand side of the roadway
- Close to the left side of the roadway ✓
- Close to the center line of the roadway
Answer: C. Close to the left side of the roadway
Before a left turn from a one-way street, be close to the left side of the roadway.
Why this is the answer
The handbook's turning-a-corner section says to move into the proper lane before turning: the far right lane for a right turn, and the far left lane in your direction for a left turn. On a one-way street, that leftmost position in your direction is the left side of the roadway. Signalling alone is not enough, and the right-side rule belongs to right turns. So the correct position is close to the left side.
Why the other answers are wrong
- A. It does not matter provided you signal — Signalling is required, but the handbook also says to move into the proper lane before turning; position is not something you can ignore as long as you signal.
- B. Close to the right hand side of the roadway — Close to the right side is the starting position for a right turn, not a left turn from a one-way street.
- D. Close to the center line of the roadway — The centre-line position is described for a left turn from a two-way road; for a left turn the handbook points you to the far left lane in your direction.
Remember it
Remember it as left turn, leftmost lane in your direction; right turn, rightmost lane.
